A lighting designer shares three things recessed lights are good at and three things to look out for. Recessed downlights, sometimes called can lights, are a feature of many well-lit homes and a favorite tool for professional lighting designers. These usually inconspicuous fixtures are great for adding drama or illuminating countertops, but they can also create overly dark interiors, or even glare. Here are three great benefits of downlights.

1. Dramatic Light

Like a spotlight on a stage, a strong beam of light shining on a precious painting or statue will grab our attention. Recessed downlights can also add significant drama to a space by accentuating architectural features like a stone face on a fireplace.

2. Push light or focus light

Ambient light sources like pendant lamps and table lamps are not good at "pushing" available light onto countertops, tables and reading chairs because their beams break before reaching their destination. Recessed downlights do a better job. They're also good at illuminating double-height spaces, like the ones shown here, especially when using narrow beam spreads. The narrower the beam, the more illuminating it is at a particular point. For example, spotlights provide a strongly focused beam, while floodlights provide a wider but less focused beam.

3. Hidden Light

Nothing provides illumination more discreetly than recessed downlights. Recessed lights are getting smaller and smaller. Standard 6" cans are giving way to 2" and 3" cans, resulting in a more streamlined ceiling and a cleaner look.
